France: Meet RIANA, the robot could replace human workers in nuclear power plants
French company Areva presented its newest generation of robots designed to replace men in nuclear power plants, Monday. Footage showing how the machine operates in radioactive areas was made in one of Areva's Paris plants.
According to Areva's announcement, the robot called RIANA (Robot for Investigations and Assessments of Nuclear Areas) is capable of operating in radioactive areas to map, taking samples and measuring radioactivity. On the motorised platform, measurement or sampling modules can be interchanged dependent on the situation.
The tool is also equipped with 3D and thermal cameras, as well as laser detectors, in order to help it negotiate its way around obstacles.
