Russia: FM Lavrov vows EMERCOM assistance to flood blighted Nicaragua
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pledged that Russia will help Nicaragua to combat the serious floods that recently hit the country, as he met with Laureano Ortega, the son and special representative to Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, in Moscow, Tuesday.
Lavrov referenced, as he pledged support, that Russia's EMERCOM and the Nicaraguan Emergency Ministries have a long history of successful cooperation together. Russia's top diplomat went on to say that the emergency opens the door to "more profound bilateral cooperation".
The heavy rainfall which started in Nicaragua over ten days ago caused massive flooding that affected 14,000 people and also killed one child. The floods damaged 2,000 buildings, including hospitals and institutions.
