Belgium: Mexico committed to independent sovereignty of Ukraine says Tusk
"Mexico and the European Union are united in our commitments to uphold the independent sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine", said European Council President Donald Tusk during a press conference in Brussels, Friday, following the 7th EU-Mexico summit.
Tusk thanked Mexico for supporting "our neighbour" and said that it was "much appreciated". The European Council president was joined on stage by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
During the press conference, Tusk also noted that Mexico and the European Union had agreed to "work towards launching early negotiations to modernise and update the EU-Mexico Global Agreement, which went into force 15 years ago". The European Council president said that the move was designed to "see our relationship reach its full strategic potential".
Friday's meeting is the first bilateral summit between the EU and Mexico since 2012.
