France: Early Banksy piece sells for over HALF A MILLION in Paris!
Painted onto the side of a festival trailer, an early piece by famed graffiti artist Banksy went up for auction at Hotel Drouot auction house in Paris Monday, fetching over €500,000 ($546,000).
Painted on the side of a friend's trailer at the 1998 Glastonbury Festival, 'Silent Majority' is a joint piece by both Banksy and Inkie and depicts several men in military-esque attire landing on a beach in a rubber dingy. The trailer segment, measuring 2.4m (7.8ft) by 9.9m (32ft), is emblazoned with a large caption reading 'It's better not to rely too much on silent majorities ... for silence is a fragile thing... one loud noise and it's gone.'
Banksy's piece is just one among over 150 pieces of contemporary art that went on sale on Monday. Artists Damien Hirst, Pure Evil and Jeff Koons also featured at the show.
