Greece: Hundreds queue to see Saint Barbara relic
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Agia Varvara church in western Athens on Tuesday to see and kiss the relic of Saint Barbara, which has arrived from Venice. Saint Barbara is one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
The Church of Greece and governing Syriza have been at odds over the relic, with member of parliament Nikos Filis complaining about it being taken to the Aghios Savvas Hospital in Athens in a gesture aimed at blessing the institution and its patients. He reportedly said that it was wrong to send the message that "medicine can be replaced."
The sacred relic of Saint Barabara arrived on Sunday afternoon and is due to remain in Athens for two weeks.
