French President Francois Hollande visited the University of Havana, Monday, as part of his trip to Cuba. His visit is the first by a French leader to the island-nation and he is set to sit down with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro later on Monday. Present at the university to receive Hollande were Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel and the Dean of the University of Havana Gustavo Jose Cobreiro Suarez.

Speaking about the US blockade at the event, Hollande said that he will help to ensure that "the measures that have so severely harmed the development of Cuba, finally can be lifted, be repealed," according to the University of Havana website.

Hollande has already visited Saint-Barthelemy, Saint-Martin and Martinique during his Caribbean tour, with his final destination being Haiti, where he will travel on Tuesday.
