
Macedonia: 30 arrested in Kumanovo attacks, Kosovans suspected of leading
Footage released on Sunday by Macedonia Police shows captured gunmen, who are reported to be involved in a shootout in Kumanovo that left at least eight police officers dead and 37 injured. Some of the 30 men arrested are seen wearing insignias of Kosovo Liberation Army. Fourteen of the gunmen declared dead have not been officially identified.
Clashes between state security forces and anti-government groups were ongoing since early Saturday. Residents of the districts affected were evacuated by police to safe parts of the city of Kumanovo. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and no movement is permitted in certain areas. No injuries among civilians are reported so far.
Macedonia has seen numerous protests against police brutality and the government over the last several days. However, it is not clear if the attack in Kumanovo is related to the recent demonstrations. The Ministry of Interior has not released an official statement regarding the incident yet.
