Germany: Merkel joins Dachau concentration camp survivors on 70th anniversary of liberation

Germany, Dachau

German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined survivors of the former Nazi concentration camp in Dachau, Sunday, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp on April 29, 1945.

The German Chancellor paid tribute to those who died in Dachau, highlighting the relevance of its survivors' stories. She went on to condemn several recent high-profile attacks on European Jews, adding that they "demonstrate two of the great evils of our time: murderous, Islamic terrorism and anti-Semitism." Prior to Merkel’s speech, the audience was addressed by survivors of the concentration camp, the US ambassador to Germany John B. Emerson, as well as several US soldiers involved in the liberation of Dachau.

Later, students from the Bavarian International School (BIS) and the Gymnasium Herzogenaurach read memorial poems and texts in their mother tongues, including German, Russian, Italian, French, Polish and English.

The Dachau camp was the first concentration camp built by the Nazis, erected in 1933 to hold political prisoners. Originally intended to produce goods through forced labour, the camp was eventually used to imprison and exterminate Jewish, gay and communist Germans and Austrians, killing over 31,000 prisoners. The site is open for visitors as a memorial to the victims of Nazi Germany.
