Ukraine: Chernobyl fire being battled, should be extinguished in days

Ukraine, Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
April 30, 2015 at 06:13 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Deputy Head of Ukraine's Emergency Situations Service announced on Thursday that the fire in the Chernobyl exclusion zone will be completely extinguished within the next two days. Up to 200 fire-fighters and a water-bombing aircraft continued to battle the forest fire, which has already devastated 320 hectares.

It is suspected that an arson attack on Tuesday caused the fire in the exclusion zone of the former nuclear power plant. The Ukrainian National Guard was on high alert over concerns that, due to the fire, contaminated materials could be released in the air and carried towards populated areas, if winds shifted. However, the crisis was averted and a Chernobyl spokesperson announced that the fire posed no risk to the power plant.

Chernobyl and the surrounding area have been abandoned following the 1986 nuclear disaster, in which an explosion released massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. The disaster caused an increase in radiation levels throughout much of Europe. Reactor four, where the blast took place, has been sealed off in a substantial concrete sarcophagus to prevent further leaks. Some ecologists have expressed fears that the fire could further radioactive pollution.
