USA: Dashcam shows police officer shooting unarmed black man in Miami
Footage emerged on Thursday of a police dashcam that captured the shooting of an unarmed black man named Dontrell Stephens in Miami on September 13, 2013, by Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Lin.
The footage shows Deputy Lin opening fire on Stephens after pulling him over whilst he was riding his bicycle. Following the shooting, Stephens was left paralysed from the waist down whilst Deputy Lin was cleared to return to work just four days after the incident. According to the deputy's report of the incident, he requested Stephens to get on the ground before firing four shots at the unarmed man because the 23-year-old took steps towards the officer who mistook the mobile phone in Stephen's hand for a weapon.
According to local media in Miami, Florida lawyer Jack Scarola is suing both Deputy Lin and the sheriff on the grounds that the "deputy's recorded statements following the shooting were absolutely false".
