Turkey: See suspects moments before they take prosecutor hostage
CCTV footage released by Turkish authorities on Friday, allegedly shows two suspects in the murder of prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz, entering the Caglayan Courthouse in Istanbul and making their way to Kiraz’s room moments before taking him hostage. The attack occurred on March 31, when suspects Safak Yayla and Bahtiyar Dogruyol, both members of the banned ‘Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front' (DHKP/C), took Kiraz hostage. A six-hour siege ensued after which Kiraz and his captors died after an armed intervention by security forces. The precise events that led to Kiraz's death remain unclear.
Kiraz had been leading an investigation into the death of Berkin Elvan, a teenager who died after he was hit by a police canister during the Gezi protests of 2013. Elvan died on March 11, 2014, after 269 days in a coma.
Turkish authorities responded by arresting 22 suspected members of the DHKP/C in the southern city of Antalya on April 1.
