Germany: Hurricane Niklas' strong winds sweep down trees in Berlin

Germany, Berlin

Heavy winds swept through Berlin on Tuesday, causing widespread traffic disruptions. Falling trees damaged overhead electric wires as well as homes and vehicles.

The winds which extended throughout Germany caused the nationwide railway operator Deutsche Bahn to halt all local transport in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany's most populated region. Long-distance services were also cancelled across Bavaria and a few flights were also cancelled in Frankfurt and Hamburg.

In the eastern German town of Gross Santersleben, a man was reportedly killed when a part of a concrete wall, damaged by the storm, fell on top of him. There are also reports that two road maintenance workers died after a tree fell on their car in Montabaur, Rhineland-Palatinate state.
