Latvia: See NATO flex its muscles in massive 'Summer Shield XXII' drills
Large-scale NATO military drills dubbed 'Summer Shield XXII' continued near Riga on Thursday. More than 1,100 troops as well as land, air and naval assets from Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Luxembourg, Canada and the U.S are involved in the maneuvres.
In the first stage, which is taking place from March 23-28, the soldiers are passing theoretical and practical excercises ranging from shooting drills to excercises in a mock minefield. The second stage, held from March 29-31, foresees field tactical excercises in day and night involving artillery. The annual 'Summer Shield' drills are aimed at improving 'interoperability' of NATO countries in the Baltic region.
