UK: Unexploded WWII bomb causes chaos in London
Emergency services evacuated parts of South London causing traffic chaos, on Monday, after an unexploded 1000lbs (454kg) bomb was found. Construction workers discovered the bomb, just after 0900 GMT (1000 CET) as they were working on a building site near to the world-famous Tower Bridge. The 5ft-long (1.52 metres) bomb is believed to be a v2 rocket from World War II.
Police have set-up a 1,300ft (396 metre) cordon, evacuating 50 people from nearby offices and homes. All residents within a 650ft (198 metre) radius of the explosive have been barred from entering their homes and have been told it may be two days before they can return. Emergency rest-centres have been set up by Southwark council near to Canary Wharf, to house the displaced people.
South London was heavily bombed during World War II, with huge parts of the area being fully destroyed.
