Germany: PEGIDA counter demo hits Wuppertal

Germany, Wuppertal
March 14, 2015 at 18:11 GMT +00:00 · Published

Antifa protesters marched through the streets of Wuppertal, Saturday, as anti-Islamist groups PEGIDA and 'Hooligans against Salafists' faced off against a so-called Salafist group during simultaneous rallies in the west German city.

The protesters, decrying racism, religion, and state borders, carried protest banners with one bearing the message "Breaking the racist consensus! For the emancipation of people, nation, and Ummah!"

A reported 2000 police officers were called up for the event, as an estimated 2000 PEGIDA supporters poured into the city, along with around 100 members of the group Hooligans against Salafists.

The Salafist rally, protesting the treatment of Muslim prisoners world-wide, was organised by Sven Lau. The Islamist activist gained notoriety for creating a Muslim-based community patrol group in Wuppertal in 2014 called ‘Shariah Police’.
