Latvia: Mogherini emphasises 'political solution' for Ukraine ahead of FM meeting
EU countries will continue to stay united in their joint sanctions against Russia, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Frederica Mogherini said in Riga, Friday, shortly before the start of a meeting of EU foreign ministers. "We always stayed united. We always continued to stay united. So this is not always easy," she said.
Mogherini also said the Ukrainian conflict had to be solved diplomatically, a point underscored in the latest Minsk agreement. "The implementation of the Minsk Agreement is the way to go forward," she said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the east of Ukraine was "dramatic."
A two-day informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers, also known as “Gymnich,” is taking place in Riga, Latvia on March 6 and 7. The meeting features foreign ministers from all the European Union member states and will be chaired by Mogherini and hosted by the Latvian Presidency.
Ministers are expected to discuss the situation in Libya, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the EU’s relations with Russia.
