Russia showed off its innovations in the military sector including the ZALA 421-16E Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, the modified T-90 SM battle tank, a scaled model Mi-28NE combat helicopter, scaled models of the AW139 and AW169 rescue helicopters, a Dragunov sniper rifle and the Kalashnikov AK-101 assault rifle at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2015 in Abu Dhabi, on Monday.

The ZALA 421-16E Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has a wingspan of 1.65 m (65 in) and has opto-electronic equipment and infrared payload and weighs up to 3 kg (6.6 lbs). The opto-electronic system for UAVs through suspension of detailed design allows the camera to determine the number of people in the group and the colour of their clothes, from a height of 1 km (0.62 miles). The ZALA 421-16E is able to cover a distance of 200 km (124 miles) and comes with an 18 megapixel digital SLR camera high-quality video camera on a gyro-stabilized platform with a 20 fold increase and additionally with a thermal 640 x 480 Pix camera.

The T-90 is a Russian third-generation battle tank and the most modern tank in service with the Russian Ground Forces and Naval Infantry. The T-90 uses a 125mm 2A46 smoothbore tank gun, 1G46 gunner sights, a new V-92S2F engine, and thermal sights. Standard protective measures include a blend of steel, composite armour, smoke mortars, Kontakt-5 explosive-reactive armor, laser warning receivers, Nakidka camouflage and the Shtora infrared ATGM jamming system.

Designed for the global export market, the compact AK-101 seeks to combine the reliability of the Kalashnikov assault rifles with the compatibility of the standardised 5.56×45mm NATO cartridges. The AK-101 has a capacity of 30 rounds per cartridge and can either be fired in semi or fully-automatic mode at an effective fire range of 500m. It has an attachment rail installed that can be equipped with different scopes and sights. The weight of the rifle has been reduced to a 4kg fully-loaded (9 lbs) due to the use of modern and composite materials.

IDEX 2015, held from February 22-26, is attended by over 1,200 companies from 55 countries. Russia is represented by 21 companies from the technical and military sector displaying a total of 737 pieces of military hardware and equipment. Among the attending Russian companies are Rostec, Kalashnikov Concern, Rosoboronexport, Uralvagonzavod (UVZ), Almaz-Antey, KBP Instrument Design Bureau and others.
