Russia: AVALANCHE deliberately triggered by emergency services
A critical mass of snow posing an avalanche threat was blown up in a controlled explosion by emergency services in the eastern Russian region of Sakhalin on Friday.
The snow had accumulated on high ground along the highway between the towns of Nevelsk and Shebunino. Authorities decided not to take any risks and ordered a controlled blast to bring the snow down to avoid a major risk to drivers.
The explosion was organised by 20 workers from the Peak Blasting Company under the observation of Russia's Emergencies Ministry.
