Protesters opposing the annual Viennese Academics Ball (Wiener Akademiker Ball), held by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) at Vienna's Hofburg Palace, clashed with police on Friday, as they tried to block access to the ball. Scuffles broke out between protesters and police, with protesters shouting slogans against those attending the ball and throwing bottles and firecrackers at police.

Founded in 1935, the Academics Ball is a social calendar highlight for the German National Association of Austria, while protesters argue that it attracts figures such as France's Marine Le Pen.
