      Bahrain: See SMOKE billow as clashes continue

      Protesters and police clashed in Manama on Wednesday, as demonstrators called for the release of imprisoned Shia opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman. Clashes between Salman's supporters and police escalated in the city, with protesters throwing rocks at police, who responded by firing tear gas canisters.

      Salman, who leads the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, was arrested on Dec. 28 and charged with seeking to incite a change of government by force and inciting hatred of a segment of society.

      The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) called for the release of Sheikh Salman on Dec. 30. The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society has rejected the charges against Salman.
