USA: END OF THE WORLD approaches as Doomsday Clock ticks closer to midnight

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAC) announced that the minute hand on the infamous Doomsday Clock had been brought two minutes closer to midnight during a press conference in Washington DC, Thursday. It is the first time that the clock, representing a countdown to a politically related global catastrophe, has been changed in three years.

Citing both the ongoing threat from nuclear war and the growing dangers of climate change, BAC members stated that they had brought the clock forward due partly to the rapidly increasing amount of carbon in the atmosphere, and its run-off effects. When asked why the clock had been brought forward now, Kennette Benedict, Executive Director of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, added that "This year especially, the board feels a great sense of urgency. The probability of global catastrophe is really very high, and the actions needed to reduce the risks of disaster must be taken very soon.”

Created in 1947 in the wake of a global nuclear threat, the Doomsday Clock sits in the BAC’s offices at the University of Chicago.
