Russia: Pro-Navalny rally turns into anti-Navalny protest
A planned demonstration in Moscow's Manezhnaya Square in support of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny turned into more of a pro-government rally Thursday, as anti-Navalny and anti-Maidan protesters came out to voice their opposition to the planned rally.
Protesters came to the square next to the Kremlin to show their support for the government, wearing St. George ribbons and anti-Maidan symbols. They chanted slogans such as "Maidan will not pass" and "Navalny to prison," with a number of arrests being made as scuffles broke in the crowd.
Alexei Navalny was briefly detained, Tuesday, for breaking the terms of his house arrest after he cut off the electronic tag meant to monitor his movements. Days earlier he was handed a suspended prison sentence of three and a half years for defrauding Yves Rocher, the French cosmetics firm.
