Germany: Merkel and Gauck lead rally for tolerance and respect for Islam
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Joachim Gauck and several faith leaders took part in a rally near Berlin's Brandenburger Gate Tuesday, supporting religious freedom and tolerance amidst growing opposition to Islam in Germany.
Organised by the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) and the Turkish Community of Berlin (TGB), ZMD chairman Ayman A. Mazyek began the rally outside the French embassy, where a moment of silence was held for the victims of the Paris terror attacks. The Charlie Hebdo assailants committed 'the most blasphemic act,' Mazyek stated as he addressed the rally.
About 10,000 attendees holding placards baring varied religious icons and the message "Yes to tolerance" listened as politicians and community representatives discussed the impact and response to the Charlie Hebdo attacks that rocked Paris last Wednesday.
The rally comes in response to the growing number of PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West) protests in Germany. Over 25,000 protesters took part in Monday's PEGIDA rally in Dresden.
