Numerous casualties were reported as the Kuibyshevsky district of Donetsk was the scene of heavy shelling, Tuesday.

Civilians homes were caught in the fire and a number of residences were destroyed and residents killed. The exact number has yet to be confirmed by authorities.

The shelling occurred as fighting intensified for control of Donetsk Airport. The forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic gave an ultimatum to pro-Kiev forces that they must leave the airport by 17.00 local time (15.00 GMT) or face destruction.
