Indonesia: AirAsia QZ8501 search operation underway

Search and rescue efforts were underway at sea in the Riau province of Indonesia which resides in close proximity to Singapore on Monday, where authorities believe missing AirAsia airliner QZ8501 may have crashed.

The search operation led by Chief Police Brigadier General Arman Depari took place from the island of Bintan down to the Lingga Islands which border Bangka-Belitung, where the plane last lost contact with air traffic control.

The AirAsia QZ8501 flight was bound for Singapore from the Indonesian city of Surabaya and went missing after losing contact with air traffic control on Sunday morning at 23:24 GMT (06:24am local time.)

As of yet the search operation has found no sign of the AirAsia plane, which had 155 passengers and 7 crew members on board.
