Germany: 'Black-faced Pete' sparks anti-racism protest in Potsdam
A group of around 15 protesters from the Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland, ISD, staged a protest in opposition to the arrival of Sinterklaas and 'Black Pete' to Potsdam on Saturday.
Despite an attempt by police to keep protesters 500 metres away from the celebration, the group held their demo with signs reading "Black Pete is racist" and "Stop black-facing now". One protester demanded an immediate end to the tradition, labelling at as hypocritical and racist.
'Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet' visited the Dutch Quarter at the invitation of the Association for the Care of Dutch Culture in Potsdam, who have been organising the event in Potsdam for 18 years.
