Approximately 400 protesters took to the streets of downtown Portland, Oregon on Saturday, following a grand jury decision earlier in the week not to indict New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Daniel Pantaleo in the July 17 death of African-American Eric Garner.

Protesters blocked traffic in major intersections and brought shopping to a standstill at Pioneer Place Mall, where they staged 'die-in' demonstrations. Protesters also attempted to demonstrate inside the Justice Center, but were prevented by law enforcement. No arrests or injuries were reported at the protest, which ended at 4:30 p.m. local time (0030 Sunday GMT).

Eric Garner died July 17 after New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold as multiple NYPD officers tried to detain him on charges of selling loose cigarettes. Garner, who was African-American, was unarmed at the time of his death.
