
Russia: Soldiers uncover remains of missing Soviet warriors
The Russian Ministry of Defence revealed a summary of the search to detect the final resting places of Soviet soldiers lost in combat, Tuesday.
The search teams were assisted by a recon unit from the 34th Mountain Brigade, which is famous for its climbing skills. The team managed to find the remains of 81 Soviet soldiers who died in combat on and around Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus region. The searches covered an area as far as the northern Kurils, on Shumshu Island, where 10 Soviet and five Japanese soldiers were found. Remains have also been found in the Leningrad region.
The Defence Ministry together with the Russian Geographical Society organized military-historical expeditions across the country to locate gravesites, as Russia commemorates the 'Day of the Unknown Soldier' for the first time ever.
