Greece: See how riot hit Athens looks at dawn
Cleaning teams were seen sweeping the debris of a riot from the streets of Athens, Wednesday. Violence erupted in the Exarcheia neighbourhood following a protest in solidarity with a prisoner on hunger strike. The prisoner, named Nikos Romanos, is serving time in prison on armed robbery charges and is striking to demand the right to university education.
During Tuesday's protest barricades were erected by protesters around Athens Polytechnic University and engulfed in flames. Vehicles were set on fire amid the clashes. Riot police deployed tear gas in an attempt to disperse protesters from university grounds.
The protest happened four days ahead of the anniversary of Alexis Grigoropoulos' death, a close friend of Romanos. Grigoropoulos' case has similarly led to massive protest campaigns across Greece when he was shot dead by a police officer in Athens on December 6, 2008.
