USA: Officials institute 'preventive measures' against Ebola
The House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on the Ebola outbreak in the Washington Thursday, instituting preventive measures. John Wagner, an official of the US Department of Homeland Security, gave a statement on measures that will be taken to detect the deadly virus at JFK, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and Newark airports - where most travellers from Ebola affected countries arrive.
The commission members heard testimonies of experts and officials, among them Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
A number of public health experts have questioned the efficacy of such measures, arguing that the measures were not effective in the battle against SARS and swine flu. Moreover, the incubation period for Ebola means that people infected could appear symptom free, while still carrying the disease.
