France: Police baton and gas protesting trade unionists at Paris Motor Show
Trade unionists from the General Confederation of Labour (La CGT) clashed with police outside the Paris Motor Show, Thursday. Around 300 protesters blocked the main road leading to the international car event. Some protesters attempted to enter the show but were pushed back by police, who baton charged and sprayed tear gas at the protesters.
Chanting collectively: "Without us, no cars", the car-production and metallurgy workers, who are employed by car manufactuer Peugeot (PSA) and ArcelorMittal - a steel and mining company - made demands for better working conditions.
One PSA worker stated the car industry is a "dictatorship," saying the French government has "submitted" to the private sector under the demands of the Movement of the Enterprises of France (MEDEF).
