Meriam Ibrahim received a standing ovation for her speech at a gala dinner held in her honour at the Omni Shoreham hotel during the second day of the Values Voter Summit in Washington on Sunday.

Ibrahim, who is of Sudanese origin, was arrested in Khartoum and charged with adultery after marrying a Christian man, Daniel Wani, in January. She was then sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging after she refused to renounce her Christian faith on May 15th 2014. While waiting in prison for her sentence together with her older son Martin, Ibrahim gave a birth to her second child Maya.

Ibrahim’s husband had emigrated from Sudan to the United States in 1998 and became a US citizen in 2005. Her sentence was eventually overturned, but the Sudanese government blocked Meriam from leaving the country. After seeking refuge at the Khartoum embassy, Ibrahim and her children joined her husband in the US. At the Gala dinner Ibrahim spoke of her worries over her husband, who suffers from muscular dystrophy and is in wheelchair, while she was in prison, saying “I was always thinking of Martin […] with no one taking care of him.”
