
Spain: Thousands flock to beatification of former Opus Dei leader
Around 200,000 people from 80 different countries flocked to the beatification mass of Alvaro del Portillo, a former leader of Catholic Church’s Opus Dei, in Madrid, Saturday.
Cardinal Angelo Amato led the outdoor ceremony at Valdebebas, initiating the process to make Del Portillo a saint.
The bishop succeeded the organisation’s founder Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer as its prelate in 1982. He died in 1994.
