Russia: Iturup Airport welcomes first ever commercial flight to Kuril Islands
The first ever commercial flight touched down at Russia's brand new Iturup Airport on the Kuril Islands, Monday.
Thirty-two passengers flew more than 700 km from the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk aboard a Dash-8-300, arriving at 14:50 local time. The airport is considered unique as it lies on the Taiga, the coniferous evergreen forests of subarctic lands, and can continue flight operations under difficult weather conditions.
Iturup is expected to develop routes connecting Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky with the Kuril Islands.
