United Kingdom: Arson attack on dogs' home kills 43 canines
An arson attack on a Harpurhey dog’s home killed 43 animals in Manchester on Thursday evening. Sanctuary workers and locals stormed the building and managed to save 150 dogs. Volunteers immediately offered homes to some of the dogs and handed out blankets to many of the distressed animals, as 30 firefighters battled the flames.
Nearly all of the surviving dogs have been harmed due to the fire, with many now transferred to the charity’s sister rescue centre in Warrington, Cheshire. Around a third of the Harpurhey sanctuary is said to have been gutted by the fire and the building may be irreparably damaged.
So far over 50,000 people have donated more than £600,000 (€750,000 / $970,000) to the animals and the charity. Police arrested a male teenager on suspicion of deliberately starting the fire on Thursday evening.
