Thirteen newborn naked mole rats were displayed at the Berlin Zoo, Wednesday. Small,hairless, and wrinkly the naked mole rat's resistance to cancer has fascinated scientists worldwide for decades.

Recently, researchers from the University of Rochester in New York and the University of Haifa found the naked mole rats' remarkable mechanism to remaining cancer free is a sugar called high-molecular-mass Hyaluronan (HMM-HA). When secreted, HMM-HA prevents the naked mole rat's cells from rapid multiplication and tumor formation.

These rodents do more than open up doors to cancer prevention. They possess a range of extraordinary characteristics, including having a lifespan of 30 years, five times longer than other rodents. They are also immune to pain, able to run backwards and forwards equally quickly and can move their teeth individually like chopsticks.
