Belgium: Ministers meet to save Europe's sanction-squeezed farmers
European ministers arrived at an extraordinary meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels on Friday to discuss the impact of Russian import restrictions on agricultural products from the EU. The meeting was chaired by the Italian Minister for Agriculture Maurizio Martina as Italy currently hold the presidency of the European Council.
According to the French Agricultural Minister, Stéphane le Foll, around €200 million ($259 million) has been allocated to mitigate the effects of import restrictions, and today's meeting will decide how the allocated funds will be spent.
Ministers at the meeting will also decide if any additional measures need to be taken to ensure the profitability of agricultural businesses in the EU.
