The family lawyer of terminally ill child Ashya King told press that the media were trying to smear the child’s parents outside Madrid’s High Court, Monday. His comments followed a hearing in which Ismael Moreno, judge of the Spanish High Court, gave the parents judicial custody of the child for a maximum period of 72 hours.
Juan Isidro Fernandez, the family’s lawyer said that the parents of the sick child, Naghemeh and Brett King, had been attacked by press because of their religious beliefs as Jehovah's Witnesses. He further stated that the only reason that the family had come to Spain was to gain money for treatment of the child.
Aysha is suffering from a brain tumour and was placed in the care of the England’s National Health Service (NHS) last week. Her parents reportedly removed the child from NHS hospital in Southampton on Sunday and took the child to Spain where they were trying to fund proton beam therapy for the youngster, treatment which is not available on the NHS. The removal of the child from hospital prompted an international search, backlash from the press, and the subsequent arrest of the parents on Spanish soil.
The Spanish court further ruled that the parents would not be extradited to England, and would remain, for the time being, in Spain.
The child is stable and is currently staying in the area of the Pediatric Oncology Maternity Hospital of Malaga, where he is guarded by the National Police. The family lawyer assured press that the child is accompanied by his older brother, 23 years old, Naveed King.
