Spain: Women hang bras in protest over mayor’s rape comment
Scores of protesters marched on Valladolid's city council, Monday, in a push for gender equality in the region. The protest came after Mayor Javier Leon de la Riva voiced support for stronger scrutiny of rape allegations on national radio.
Protesters brandished their bras while marching on the city council building, to which they attached a string of underwear. A demonstrator speaking to the crowds billed the mayor's incident as being representative of the People's Party's politics in Valladolid.
Leon de la Riva has since apologized on Twitter for his comment. He had voiced his opinion when commenting on the Interior Ministry's advice for women to avoid rape and on the dropping of a case where the victim had purportedly been lying about the assault.
