Abkhazia: Voters flock to polling stations to elect new president
Thousands of voters rushed to the polling stations in Sukhumi participate in the South Caucasian Republic of Abkhazia's presidential election, Sunday. Abkhazians were hoping that his election would put a stop to the political unrest in the country since former President Alexander Ankvab was forced to abandon his post after he was ousted earlier in June.
Big queues could be seen near the electoral district in the Abkhazian capital, Sukhumi, where polling stations were expected to stay open until 23:00 local time. Four candidates are running for the title of President of Abkhazia, including General Aslan Bzhania of the State Security service or former Interior Minister Leonid Dzapshba. These are the sixth presidential elections since the creation of the state in 1994.
A total of 154 polling stations were opened to the public in 32 constituencies of Abkhazia. Observers from 24 countries were present to monitor the elections around the different regions of the republic.
