Water cannons rained down on protesters in Santiago, Chile Thursday, as protesters clashed with police.

Earlier, thousands of demonstrators demanded that the government choose whether to negotiate with "the usual suspects" (political opposition parties and entrepreneurs) "or the social movement" when deciding education policy. Organisers Confech estimated that 80,000 people took part.

The march began at 11 a.m. local time (1500 GMT) in the northern part of Bustamante Park, after which protesters advanced along Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins to Echaurren Street. Areas near Avenida Ecuador (near the University of Santiago) and Alameda Ricardo Cumming played host to the most intense clashes between protesters and police.
