
Iraq: UN plane lands in Erbil with 100 tonnes of aid
The first of a series of UNHCR aircrafts landed in Erbil on Wednesday, part of a four-day airlift aimed at aiding internally displaced people across Iraq.
The Boeing 747 took off from Aqaba, in Jordan, and will be followed by land convoys and sea shipments from Turkey, Jordan and Dubai in the following 10 days.
UNHCR spokesperson Edward Colt said that around 2,500 tonnes of goods will be delivered to those who have fled their homes and are taking shelter in churches, schools and other premises. The shipments are comprised of 3,300 tents, 20,000 plastic sheets, 18,500 kitchen sets, and 16,500 jerry cans.
According to the UN, 1.2 million people are estimated to be internally displaced across the country.
