
Latvia: "Imposing sanctions on Russia unfortunately necessary" says Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed increased NATO cooperation and Russian sanctions with Latvian counterpart Laimdota Straujuma during a press conference held in Riga on Monday. She added she understands the concerns of the Baltic states along with Poland in light of recent developments in Ukraine.
The German leader also assured sanctions are affecting Germany as well as its smaller neighbours, referring to recent measures taken against Russia as "unfortunately necessary."
