Fergusons streets were busy with communal volunteers Saturday following a night of intense clashes with police. Both men and women of all ages were out on the streets, clearing debris and attending to buildings caught in the cross-fire.

Armed with tear gas, security forces arrived in armoured trucks the night before to disperse crowds. Protesters had gathered in front of the Quiktrip convenience store on the corner of West Florissant Avenue but were met with police officers dressed in MARPAT camouflage, body armour and ballistic helmets.

The heavy militarized police squads patrolling Ferguson are armed with pistols, short-barrelled 5.56-mm assault rifles and carrying several magazines capable of holding 30 rounds each. Also deployed are Lenco Bearcat armoured vehicles, capable of carrying up to ten officers and being equipped with M60, 240B and Mark 19 weapons systems.

One week after the fatal shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, racial tensions have clearly been ignited in Ferguson. Three of the Ferguson Police Department's 53 members are black, while according to U.S. Census statistics nearly 70 percent of Ferguson's 21,000 population are black.
