USA: New commander Ronald Johnson shows how to police Ferguson
Ferguson's new police commander Ronald S Johnson joined the peaceful protest in Ferguson on Thursday, as demonstrations in the town continue after the police shooting of Michael Brown. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced Thursday that the State Highway Patrol captain would take over command from Ferguson law enforcement starting on Thursday night, in an attempt to de-escalate tensions in the town.
Protesters had gathered at the QuikTrip supermarket and many accompanied Johnson as he walked along Florissant Avenue with the chief of the police Colonel Thomas Jackson. Several protesters shook hands with Johnson, as many crowded round the new police commander. The change in atmosphere was stark, given that Wednesday night saw protesters confronted with tear-gas, flash-bangs and rubber bullets.
Eighteen-year-old Michael Brown was shot dead by a police officer Saturday in Ferguson. Brown was allegedly unarmed at the time of the daylight shooting.
