Russia: This plant takes three decades to flower.. then dies
Two Agave Americana plants began to blossom outside the main post office in Sochi on Thursday, a feat the plants achieve just once in their lives before dying. The plants sprout vibrant yellow-green flowers atop tall sturdy stalks after spending 10-30 years in the pre-flower stage. It is unknown what conditions rouse them to blossom, but once they flower they usually die within months.
The flowers in Sochi have grown to a height of 6 metres (19.7 feet) and are now surrounded by swarms of bees. In some cases the plants have been known to reach as high as 9 metres (29.5 feet). Agave juice is widely used in cosmetic and culinary products due to its nutritious qualities.
