Georgia: Mourners bid farewell to Shevardnadze in Tbilisi

Former Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze was put to rest on Friday at a funeral service in Tbilisi. He died on July 7 after succumbing to an unspecified illness, he was 86 years old.

Attending the ceremony were former US Secretary of State James Baker, former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, and parliamentarians from Azerbijan and Japan. Shevardnadze also served as the last Soviet Foreign Minister and received wide appraisal from western leaders for his role in reorienting Soviet foreign policy before the Soviet Union fell.

Assassination attempts were made on his lfife in 1992, 1995 and 1998, all of which he survived.
