Cuba: Putin and Raul Castro pay respects at Soviet memorial
Russian President Vladimir Putin began his official visit to Cuba by laying a wreath at the Memorial to Soviet Internationalist Soldiers in the suburbs of Havana, Friday. President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba, Raul Castro, also took part in the ceremony.
The two presidents honoured the memory of Soviet soldiers and officers who died on Cuban soil while performing the internationalist duty. The memorial was opened on February 23, 1978 on the site where the soldiers are buried. An eternal flame burns before the monument's central wall.
Ahead of Vladimir Putin's visit to Cuba, the Russian president signed a law to write off 90 percent of Cuba's Soviet-era debt, approximately $32 billion (€23.51 billion).
