
Germany: Merkel christens next-gen research ship
German Chancellor Angela Merkel christened the research ship "Sonne" in Rostock-Warnemünde, Friday. The ship has place for around 40 scientists to work on deep-sea research in the Indian and Pacific oceans.
After a construction period of 20 months and a cost of €124.4 million ($170 million), around 300 guests from the fields of politics and science gathered to welcome the new flagship. The ship, built by the Meyer and Neptun shipyards, is 116 metres (360 feet) long and contains the latest technical equipment. It will share some of the duties of its eponymous predecessor which was built in 1969 and is currently docked in Durban, South Africa.
