Holy See: Pope Francis asks forgiveness for church sex abuse
Pope Francis met the victims of sexual abuse by clerics at the Vatican on Monday. Six sexual abuse survivors, two each from Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, attended a private mass held by the pope and met with him afterwards.
In his speech Pope Francis asked for forgiveness for the abuse and for the “Church leaders who did not respond adequately to reports of abuse.”
Vatican officials say 3,420 credible cases of sexual abuse by clerics have been handled in the last 10 years, and that 824 clerics have been defrocked and 2,572 ordered to "live a life of prayer or penance."
